March Contractor of the Month: Jenny Regan

Where did you grow up and where did you go to college? What did you study?

I grew up in McLean, Virginia, and went to the University of Kentucky. I studied Integrated Strategic Communications, which is essentially just a fancy term for their advertising program.

What did (or do!) you want to be when you grow up? How did you get into marketing and communications?

I actually always wanted to work in marketing! I took a lot of marketing courses in high school, and I continued that path into college. I enjoy that you can do marketing for any type of product/service/mission – for example, in my career, I’ve marketed everything from toilets to skincare.

What do you like to do for fun? (Pre-COVID, currently or both 😊)

I jumped on the COVID trend of cooking and baking so I have been enjoying that a lot! I also love getting outside – whether that’s a bike ride, a hike, or just a walk around the block.

Favorite food? Drink?

Wow, it’s so tough to choose just one. My favorite food is probably some type of pasta (highly recommend Alison Roman’s Caramelized Shallot Pasta). My favorite drink is a spicy margarita. I wouldn’t recommend having those two together though!

One bucket list destination…

Japan or Thailand. I had a trip to Asia that was canceled due to COVID so I’m anxiously awaiting when I can go back to planning it.

What’s the best advice a manager has ever given you?

You are your own best advocate. This advice always really stuck with me because even though you may have coworkers or friends looking out for you (and I hope that you do!), at the end of the day you are the best person to speak up for your own needs.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in their career?

I’m a big believer that kindness goes a long way both in my personal and professional life. I’ve had past coworkers become future hiring managers – you never know how your paths may converge with someone down the line. I’ve found it never hurts to be kind to everyone!

What work accomplishment are you most proud of?

It’s hard to pinpoint an exact moment, but anytime I’ve helped launch a product I’ve been immensely proud. To see your ideas come to life in a product offers a great sense of tangible accomplishment. In my current role, there’s an added layer of pride because the products I work on are helping to drive the organization’s social mission.

What has been the biggest plus about working from home during the pandemic? Challenge?

To me, the biggest plus is having the added time back in my day from not having to commute. My commute wasn’t long but having the time back allows me to add in more time to do the things I enjoy such as cooking and exercising. Another huge plus is not having to lug my Tupperware containers from breakfast and lunch on the metro.

A challenge has been missing out on one on one time with colleagues – I think I took for granted the times before and after meetings where you’d get to catch up and get to know each other!

What do you like about being a TorchLight contractor?

From scheduling my first interview to almost two years later, TorchLight has been a wonderful company to work for! Everyone there is friendly, transparent, and communicative. An added bonus has been getting to know my fellow TorchLight contractors where I work.

Congratulations again to our March Contractor of the Month, Jenny Regan. Keep up the good work! Check out our last Contractor of the Month, Pat Lute.
