TorchLight May Contractor of the Month: Munazzah Aslam
Meet our May contractor of the month, Munazzah Aslam! Learn more about Munazzah – how she got into marketing, her proudest achievements and what she loves most about the TorchLight team!
Where did you grow up and where did you go to college? What did you study?
I grew up in Berkshire, England, and attended the University of West London, where I received my bachelor’s degree with honors in multimedia computing with Digital Arts.
What did (or do!) you want to be when you grow up? How did you get into marketing and communications?
I’ve always been creative and wanted to go into a design-related field like architecture. Multimedia and computer studies were becoming more popular then so I picked that. I began my career designing and developing websites which led to advertising and email marketing. Developing product campaigns for consumers provided me with marketing communications experience. Seven years ago, I took a new role in developing communications for our internal audiences. I applied the same marketing strategies to deliver creative and engaging communications, earning CEO awards and Board of Directors recognition. I’ve been doing internal communications ever since and I love it.
What do you like to do for fun?
Spend time with family and friends. Listening to audiobooks has become my new favorite activity in my spare time.
Favorite food? Drink?
I love a variety of foods and drinks, but my favorite, and the one I miss the most, is British fish and chips. My new favorite drink is fruit-flavored sparkling water.
One bucket list destination…
I would love to go to Hawaii among many other destinations.
What’s the best advice a manager has ever given you?
The best advice I have received is to bring your authentic self to work and align your personal and professional goals.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in their career?
- Offer to support projects outside your immediate team – it will allow you to learn other perspectives and gain problem-solving skills.
- Network with others in your field so you can expand your professional connections and learn about what others do in their organizations.
- Challenge yourself to do something difficult outside your current skill set – it will lead to research and learning something new.
- Be humble and teachable.
What work accomplishment are you most proud of?
Most recently, I put together a hybrid Town Hall event live-streamed from two locations. More than 2,400 employees attended virtually and in-person from one of six watch parties across the US. This was my first in-person Town Hall since the pandemic, so I didn’t really know what to expect. We prepared for everything and it went really well. What made it successful was that we thought through the interactive employee experience for both in-person and virtual attendees, making it engaging and socially impactful. We received lots of positive feedback from employees, so that’s always a good sign.
With my previous organization, I onboarded an email tool that allowed internal communicators to build professionally branded emails without using design skills. The tool saved the team hours of manual email development and enabled communicators to target their emails, receive two-way real-time feedback, metrics on employee engagement, and improve the overall employee experience.
What has been the biggest plus about working from home?
The biggest plus is saving commute time. I didn’t realize how much being stuck in traffic each day affected my energy levels until I began working remotely and not having to commute three hours a day.
What do you like about working for TorchLight?
The team is so supportive and responsive. I like the fact that they have regular check-ins with their contractors to make sure everything is going smoothly. I have had the pleasure of meeting a few Torchlight team members in person who are absolutely delightful.
Congratulations again to our March Contractor of the Month, Munazzah Aslam. Keep up the good work! Check out our previous Contractor of the Month, Nathan Sprenger.
