Where did you grow up and where did you go to college? What did you study?

I grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago and went to Hampden-Sydney College. I studied Government/Political Science with a double minor in Public Policy and Environmental Studies.

What did (or do!) you want to be when you grow up? How did you get into marketing and communications?

When I grew up, I wanted to be CEO of a successful company. I lived in Arizona and worked in sales after I graduated from college—I loved helping people and talking with them 1:1. I transitioned into advertising and ran my own small marketing company. When I moved to DC, I initially worked for a large consulting firm before my current role with TorchLight. I am a firm believer in win-wins. I want to market and drive technologies and solutions that will allow us to live the way we want to while still doing the right thing for the environment and climate. Likewise, I have always been interested in big ideas and how to effectively communicate them. It’s hard to communicate big ideas without great marketing.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love the outdoors and to be in nature. I try to travel, go hiking, and kayak whenever I can.

Favorite food? Drink?

My favorite food is definitely sushi – I could eat sushi every day (if I had unlimited income). I like whiskey and am a big fan of a good old fashioned.

One bucket list destination…

I want to travel the world. One destination on my bucket list, which I am working to knock-off for my 30th birthday, is Greece and the Greek Islands.

What’s the best advice a manager has ever given you?

I have been lucky enough to have several great managers. Each teaches me something different. Some of my favorite pieces of advice I have received are to set goals with the end in mind and take a longer-term view.

Do you have a mentor? If so, how did they become your mentor?

I have been really lucky to have several great mentors throughout my career and personal life. For me, finding mentors has been an organic process. I usually either find someone who can teach me something that I need to or want to learn, or I focus on what I need to learn and the right person seems to show up.

What work accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am most proud of the relationships I have made and the perspectives I have gained.

Finally, what do you like about being a TorchLight contractor?

I like working with an amazing client and having an internal team that has my back.

Congratulations again to our February Contractor of the Month, Scott Clayton. Keep up the good work! Check out our last Contractor of the Month, Jennifer Coggins.
