Our client, a well-established nonprofit professional association, is seeking a Director of Marketing to lead integrated marketing strategy and execution across programs, products, events, and non-dues revenue initiatives.
This is a senior-level, hands-on leadership role for a confident marketing professional who can balance strategy and execution, bring structure to evolving systems, and partner effectively with internal stakeholders across the organization. The ideal candidate has deep experience in association or nonprofit marketing environments, thrives in smaller teams, and brings the judgment and credibility needed to lead through influence, collaboration, and clarity.

Location
Remote with occasional in-office presence. Candidates must be local to the Washington, DC / DMV area. No exceptions.

Responsibilities
- Develop and execute integrated marketing strategies supporting non-dues revenue programs, products, events, publications, and educational offerings.
- Lead marketing efforts for annual conferences, meetings, and key organizational initiatives, ensuring consistent brand positioning across channels and touchpoints.
- Partner with senior leadership to align marketing strategy with organizational goals, revenue targets, and long-term growth priorities.
- Oversee online marketing and digital campaigns, including email, web, and social media, in collaboration with communications and member engagement teams.
- Analyze campaign performance, sales data, and engagement metrics to inform strategy, optimize ROI, and adjust tactics as needed.
- Manage and evolve brand standards across collateral, digital platforms, advertising, signage, and trade show presence.
- Direct external agencies and vendors, including digital and design partners, ensuring quality execution and alignment with goals.
- Lead, mentor, and manage a small marketing team, establishing workflows, project plans, and processes that drive accountability and efficiency.
- Introduce and refine systems, documentation, and marketing operations to improve clarity, consistency, and execution across the department.
- Serve as a collaborative partner across departments, balancing diplomacy with the ability to set boundaries, standards, and best practices.
- Support individual giving and fundraising initiatives through marketing strategy and execution, in partnership with development leadership.
Skills Needed
- 10+ years of experience in marketing, with a strong preference for nonprofit, association, or professional society environments.
- At least 5 years of people management experience, with a proven ability to lead, mentor, and support teams with varying personalities and tenure.
- Demonstrated success as a player-coach—comfortable setting strategy while remaining hands-on in execution.
- Strong analytical and strategic planning skills, with the ability to translate data into actionable insights.
- Experience managing integrated marketing programs across email, digital, print, events, and web.
- Proven ability to build structure, processes, and workflows in environments that need operational clarity.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to develop compelling promotional messaging.
- Confidence working with senior stakeholders and navigating complex internal dynamics with professionalism and diplomacy.
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or a related field.
