Meet the TorchLight Team: Susan Mullin

Meet our Senior Director of Finance and Operations and beloved employee Sue Mullin! Sue keeps the financial trains running, makes sure our employees are paid and happy- and so much more. She’s been with us since 2015 and is an incredible member of our team. Read on to learn more about Sue!
Where are you from?
I am from Johnstown, NY. No, not the Johnstown that had the big flood. This Johnstown is a small town nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks and was the birthplace of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a leader in the women’s suffrage movement.
What did you study and how did you get into the recruiting space?
I have always loved numbers and how they can help tell a story and inform a conversation. I studied math and economics at Colgate where I was fortunate enough to live across the hall from TorchLight’s CEO and Founder Heidi Parsont our sophomore year. My friendship with Heidi has taken me to many places – most recently into the recruiting space. I feel so fortunate to be able to work with her and support her vision for the company.
What are some of your previous jobs?
I started off my post-college life teaching English in Japan (with Heidi) and then in former Czechoslovakia right before the country split into two. Living and working abroad was such an incredible experience, but I had financial responsibilities (unfortunately!) and needed to find a job that would pay more than $150/month. I was lucky enough to get a job as an actuarial analyst at Towers Perrin (now Willis Towers Watson) in Boston, working on pension plan valuations and consulting.
I later moved to DC with Towers Perrin and shifted my focus to helping clients implement benefit calculation systems. I had the opportunity to move from benefits consulting to in-house HR and benefits management when I joined Atlantic Media. I may have stayed there indefinitely had I not decided to join my husband’s bathroom remodeling company. After we exited that business and we had our son, I joined TorchLight!
What’s your dream travel destination and why?
I would love to go to the Galapagos Islands. Perhaps I am romanticizing it a bit, but I find nature so inspiring and restorative. I would love to experience its unique wildlife and nature firsthand.
What’s your favorite thing to do during your free time?
Spend time with my husband and 8 yr old son!
What’s the best part of working remotely?
Working remotely allows me the ability to better juggle work and personal life challenges and be more present with my family. I also feel like I can be more productive because I am not exhausted from a horrid commute or worried that I will be late to pick up my son from school.
What do you like most about your job at TorchLight?
The people! We have such an amazing team – so supportive, caring, and collaborative. It is truly a pleasure to work at TorchLight!
