November Contractor of the Month: Stacy Yu

We’d like to congratulate Stacy Yu for her selection as TorchLight’s November Contractor of the Month! TorchLight Contractor of the Month recognizes the high-quality work and contributions of contractors like Stacy. Stacy was selected because of her significant marketing expertise and impact on results. We recently sat down with her to learn more about her background, interests, and career (she wanted to be an archaeologist at one point!). Read on to learn more about Stacy.

Where did you grow up and where did you go to college? What did you study?

I grew up in Timonium, Maryland, just north of Baltimore.  I then went off to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and received a Bachelor of Science (SB) in Management Science.

What did (or do!) you want to be when you grow up? How did you get into marketing and communications?

At age 5, I wanted to be a doctor.  Next, at age 7, I wanted to be an archeologist. After that, at age 10, I wanted to be an architect.  At 14, I wanted to go into computer graphics for film.  Then at 19, I took my first marketing and communications course while in college and I was in love. The rest is history.  😊

What do you like to do for fun? (Pre-COVID or currently or both 😊)

When away from the computer, I coach young athletes in the art and philosophy of taekwondo. I also love to draw, cook, and (Pre-COVID) travel!

Favorite food? Drink?

Favorite food: Sushi… hands down. Favorite Drink: White Sangria.

One bucket list destination…

Bhutan. It’s so different from everything that we know. I would love to experience their type of living–even for just a little while

What’s the best advice a manager has ever given you?

Communicate, communicate, communicate. Most people can’t read minds. Work to communicate in the way they receive it.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in their career?

Don’t be afraid to veer off the traditional career path every once in a while. Every experience is valuable and will help move you towards a life that’s right for you. In my case, I started out in technology, after which I received an additional degree and work experience in hospitality and restaurant management. This shift gave me great background that I’ve applied to my work with smaller businesses and consulting clients ever since.

What work accomplishment are you most proud of?

To this day, there are two major work accomplishments from back in the early days of my career that I’m really proud of:

As a product marketing manager, I managed and successfully recaptured the majority of market share during a particularly challenging period at the height of the high-tech boom.

I worked with a team of outstanding marketing professionals to help build a new corporate identity in the networking space for one of the largest corporate spin-offs in Silicon Valley at the time.

What has been the biggest plus about working from home during the pandemic? Challenge?

The biggest plus during the pandemic has been spending more time with my family.  The biggest challenge… spending more time with my family.

Finally, what do you like about being a TorchLight contractor?

The staff.  Everyone at TorchLight has been so friendly, responsive, organized, and extremely easy to work with!

Congratulations again to our November Contractor of the Month, Stacy Yu. Keep up the good work! Check out our last Contractor of the Month, Liz Leverson.
