TorchLight October Contractor of the Month: Imani Wills
We’d like to introduce you to our October Contractor of the Month: Imani Wills! Imani was selected due to her hard work and outstanding marketing skills. Here’s what her manager had to say:
“Imani is a rockstar marketer. She is great at building relationships across the firm and everyone who meets her wants her to be on their project. There’s not a challenge that Imani won’t take on and she does so with an exceptional mix of strategic, analytical and collaborative brilliance.”
Read on to learn more about Imani: her favorite activities, her bucket list destinations and career advice!
Where did you grow up and where did you go to college? What did you study?
I grew up in Queens, New York and attended Seton Hall University with concentrations in Marketing & Management.
What did (or do!) you want to be when you grow up? How did you get into marketing and communications?
Combining my love for dance & my interest in planning, I originally wanted to work in Performing Arts management. After doing research, I learned a business background would be a great foundation, so I started college as a Business Undecided Major. After taking my first year of required classes, I realized I loved marketing. Marketing allows me to be both creative and analytical which keeps everyday interesting.
What do you like to do for fun? (Pre-COVID or currently or both 😊)
Binge-watching TV & reading, which I’ve had more time to do during COVID. I also love to travel, explore new restaurants and attend sporting events. All things I’m excited to get back to soon!
Favorite food? Drink?
My favorite food & drink would have to be a New York slice of pizza and a glass of iced sweet tea.
One bucket list destination…
Narrowing this down to one is tough, but I’m going to say Germany. Specifically, during late November/December. My fiancé showed me photos of the Christmas Market setup there, and I can honestly say that’s the first photo I’ve seen of a place that can compete with a NYC Christmas!
What’s the best advice a manager has ever given you?
Always speak up. Though it can be intimidating early in your career or if upper management is your audience, it’s worth voicing your opinion. Doing so could bring a new perspective & allow the group to talk through potential options and consequences.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in their career?
Volunteer as much as you can. While I don’t think you should say yes to everything, I do think taking on tasks/projects that aren’t in your typical job description allow you to interact with other people in the organization as well as give you some new skills and learning opportunities you may not have had otherwise.
What work accomplishment are you most proud of?
My ability to switch industries. I’ve been able to work in financial services, retail marketing, direct marketing and now at a Nonprofit. I’m proud that I can carry my background and experiences anywhere I go, and they’ll be viewed as valuable and relevant.
What has been the biggest plus about working from home during the pandemic? Challenge?
The biggest plus has been having my dog as my new colleague! I also appreciate how my team has Zoom get-togethers including other furry special guests. A challenge for me was realizing that I need to be deliberate in moving. You don’t realize how much you move throughout the day heading to different meeting rooms in the office until you’re basically a piece of furniture in your own home.
What do you like about working for TorchLight?
Being a contractor for the first time I had no clue what to expect. However, I’ve truly appreciated the support, transparency and willingness to listen to feedback that TorchLight has shown.
Congratulations again to our October Contractor of the Month, Imani Wills. Keep up the good work! Check out our last Contractor of the Month, Irene Lee.
