Meet the Team: Julie Lowe
Meet TorchLight’s Chief Culture Officer Julie Lowe! Get to know more about Julie – where she grew up, her dream of revisiting Italy and why she loves working with the TorchLight team.
Where are you from?
I’m originally from Torrance, California. I lived there until my early 30s then my husband’s job pulled me away kicking and screaming. Since then, we have lived in Houston, TX, Birmingham, AL, Alexandria, VA and now St. Louis, MO. But… I will always be a California Girl at heart.
What did you study and how did you get into the recruiting space?
I studied journalism and public relations with a minor in psychology.
I started my career mostly in training and organizational development. I worked very closely with human resources, finding talent, and then training new employees. Many things I did were people-centered and ultimately touched the recruiting space. I landed in contract recruitment when my child was young because it offered the flexibility to juggle being a new mom and maintaining some level of work.
What are some of your previous jobs?
My career out of college started in collections and corporate billing. It was challenging and I knew it wasn’t for me long term, but I was fresh out of school and didn’t know what I wanted to do. The experience taught me some fundamental things involving service, persuasion and achieving goals that have carried with me throughout my career. While I stayed with the same company for 15 years, I moved into various jobs that involved start-up, technology and ultimately training and development. Training and organizational development is where I found my sweet spot and from then on, I continued to grow with various companies. I worked in industries such as property management, hospitality, government contracting, healthcare, and marketing and communications.
What’s your dream travel destination and why?
I have many places I would like to travel but I seem to dream most about a return to Italy. My husband and I went to Tuscany about seven years ago and fell in love with the food, the culture and beauty. I would love to spend some time on the Amalfi Coast. I think Italy calls to me because I had a traditional little Italian grandmother. She was the most amazing cook with no recipes and a natural gift for turning anything into a culinary delight. I feel that Italy brings me back to the Italian roots of my family. Italy is just one of many trips we have on our list of to-do and see. I have a lot of Irish and French in my genes… Ireland and France are high on the bucket list.
What’s your favorite thing to do during your free time?
I love to exercise so anytime I have time to myself, I try to go for a long walk/run, or go to the gym to take a class – anything to get moving makes me happy. I also love to spend time with my family and friends doing things we mutually enjoy like good food, wine tasting, exploring new places to go, or just relaxing and visiting.
What’s the best part of working remotely?
Working remotely allows me to do my job from anywhere. We moved from Virginia to St. Louis in 2020 and the ability to work remotely has allowed me to keep my job and carry on with TorchLight. Remote work lets me get my job done and saves me from having to commute to an office. TorchLight has been a remote company since its inception. I can’t imagine having to go into an office the way I used to do so many years ago. I love having my office in my house and can get things I need to do at home all while working. No time is wasted. There are far too many benefits to list – it just works for me and for the people I work with at TorchLight.
Finally, what do you like most about your job at TorchLight?
Hands down, it’s the people I work with. Our team is amazing, and my current job lets me focus on them, the culture, the strategy and employee engagement. I was the first hire at TorchLight almost 11 years ago and it was the best decision I ever made. I love that I get to make an impact on our team and we are small enough that all our opinions are heard.
Retirement is not too far away – but I can’t see it yet because I truly love what I do. I get to touch many things in our company: training, employee engagement, events, strategy, leadership, coaching and more. There is never a boring day and tons of variety in my work. That’s right, I drank the Kool-Aid because I had a part in creating the recipe.
