What It Takes to Land a Marketing Manager Job

Whether you’re a seasoned marketing pro ready to take the next step into management, or a current marketing manager looking for new opportunities, you need the right strategy to land a marketing manager job.  If you’re ready to take the leap, here’s what it takes to be successful.

Education and Experience

In order to get a marketing manager job, you must have either a bachelor’s degree or a significant number of years’ experience in the field. Make sure to study the requirements and the culture of your target organizations before applying to be a marketing coordinator in Washington.

The Ability to Add Real Value

CMOs care about one thing when filling a marketing manager job: Can you deliver results? Before you even begin applying for positions, make sure your resume and your portfolio accurately depict the value you bring to the table as both an individual contributor and a leader.

When it comes to your resume, don’t list tasks, list achievements. Quantify those achievements with data whenever possible. For example, don’t just say you were responsible for increasing traffic to the company website. Say you successfully increased organic search traffic to the website by 30 percent year-over-year and increased advertising and referral traffic by 35 percent. Just makes sure any claim you make can be verified.

Project Management Skills

If you’re new to management, you’ll need to spend a little extra time to proving your the right candidate for a marketing manager job. One of the most important skills of a marketing manager is project management. Make sure you have examples and anecdotes ready to go that show your ability to manage projects from end to end. Whenever you’ve been asked to take a lead on a project, what was your approach? How did you manage deadlines? What did you do when challenges or roadblocks got in the way? If you can articulate your abilities as a project manager, you’ll stand out from the crowd.

Technology Skills

Technology is critical to marketing success. Someone in a marketing manager job must be able to successfully use a variety of platforms and programs. Even if you don’t know which types of technology a potential employer uses, you’ll want to talk about the systems you are an expert in, and you’ll want to talk about your ability to learn new platforms quickly. It will also be important to discuss the ways in which technology helps facilitate goal achievement in marketing. You want potential employers to see you embrace new technologies and you’ll be able to keep them ahead of trends.

Passion

Passion for marketing is something that can’t be learned. Either you have it, or you don’t. Employers want to fill their marketing manager job with someone who is enthusiastic about what they do. After all, passion can be contagious. If you are excited about the work, you’ll inspire that same enthusiasm in your team.
