Where did you grow up and where did you go to college? What did you study?

I grew up in Alexander City, Alabama, but moved to LA to attend the University of Southern California. I spent 2 years at USC before transferring to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). There, I majored in graphic design and received a minor in illustration!

What did (or do!) you want to be when you grow up? How did you get into marketing and communications?

I wanted to be an architect throughout my entire childhood! That’s actually why I went to USC. But unfortunately, reality set in after one semester; I realized the misery of architecture was not for me. So I landed on graphic design, and after graduating I found a great job at an advertising agency. That’s where I found my groove in the marketing world.

What do you like to do for fun?

I like doing art, going hiking and kayaking, reading, and slacklining. I’m also a big true-crime fan and lover of all things spooky, so I binge podcasts and TV series to get my fix.

Favorite food? Drink?

Mushroom risotto and chardonnay! Although Indian food is a close second…

One bucket list destination…

Only one?! Ugh. Okay, then New Zealand. No wait, Croatia! No, Japan! Scotland? You can’t make me choose!

What’s the best advice a manager has ever given you?

Step away from it. When you’re hitting a creative wall and just can’t get it right, step away from it. Go make some coffee, take a walk, anything. Coming back to a project with fresh eyes can be SO helpful. Even if you’re not suffering from creative block, sometimes a night’s sleep will help you see ways to improve yesterday’s genius idea.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in their career?

Roll with the punches. Whether it’s a picky client or a more experienced Creative Director, someone is inevitably going to want to change your beautiful designs or push back on your inspired pitches. Don’t let it get to you, because at the end of the day, it’s just a project. Adaptability is a great trait to have.

What work accomplishment are you most proud of?

I LOVE being the illustrator for Waldorf Astoria’s new brand identity! It’s such a privilege, and very exciting to think about how many people will see my illustrations representing a renowned brand for years to come.

What has been the biggest plus about working from home during the pandemic?

The work-life balance. I love having my cat for company and being able to use my breaks for little house chores.

What do you like about working for TorchLight?

Everyone at TorchLight is a genuine delight. I feel supported and seen, and I know that any request, question, or concern I have will be taken care of without incident.

Congratulations again to our July Contractor of the Month, Sophie Odom. Keep up the good work! Check out our last Contractor of the Month, Mary Hiyama.
